i have become one of those people who are constantly attached to their ipod. music has been a huge part of my day during the last few months. when it's quiet in my house, i can't relax until there is some sort of background music. the only time i don't listen to music is when i'm outside walking or biking (for some reason it feels strange to cover natural sounds with artificial ones).

are you ready? because here is the best playlist of all time (well, these 10 songs are my favorite until i make a new best playlist of all time).

1. hold you in my arms/ray lamontagne
2. porte de souvenir/les nubians
3. run/snow patrol
4. ride/cary brothers
5. my love/justin timberlake
6. so far away/donavon frankenreiter
7. someday/the afters
8. angels and devils/mishka
9. time of your song/matisyahu
10. to be alone with you/sufjan stevens

in memoriam: MST3K

when i was a freshman in college, i used to watch this show called "Mystery Science Theater 3000" on the Sci-Fi channel. if any of you are not familiar with the genius that is MST3K, i invite you to start now. there was a group of us that would skip class to watch it - college tuition well spent. i had a group of friends that would get together and watch it on the weekends. sometimes i wonder if it was the show itself or the complex witty humor from each member of the group that made it worth skipping creative writing (tribute: mike and mark - two of the funniest guys i've ever known. best line: "let's just not talk for a while.").

the show was canceled in 1999, much to my dismay. sometimes you can find reruns on comedy central and you can rent some of them at the video store. it never fails to make me laugh. out loud. some of the best episodes are prince of space, MST 3000: the movie, the creeping terror, pod people, horror at party beach, mitchell, and cave dwellers.

i had a huge crush on mike the janitor. he is everything a girl wants - funny, cute, smart, resourceful, even tempered, sweet, good attitude in even the worst situations, has a great smile, wears a jumpsuit and is just the right amount of desperate after a few years of space imprisonment.

best movie lines (the phrase, "guess you had to be there" kind of goes without saying, but if you kind of squint whilst you read, it's still funny):

"all you can eat ME tonight."
"special agent sweetheart."
"officer third wheel."
"i don't like slumber parties now that i'm in my forties."
"allow me to knee you right in the groin."
"drink it all. sometimes the poison's at the bottom."
"let me throw a gay man at you."
"why does he have to kill them to prove his point? can't he just show them a pie chart or something?"
"who is this gentle stranger with pecs like melons and knees of fringe?"
"it's speedy delivery guy, and boy does he have a package!"
(referring to the muscle bound/beefcake main character on space mutiny:) "it's butch deadlift! splint chesthair! blast hardcheese! dirk hardpeck! blast thickneck! big mclargehuge!"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

p.s. feel free to make fun of what a nerd i am.

Overheard (more or less)

i've decided that i talk too much. so i'm going to try to listen more than i speak. there is a downside to this as i'll be paying sharp attention what people say when normally i'd either ignore them or talk over them. warning: anything you say (or type) in my immediate proximity can and will be posted on my blog.

random things overheard this week:

wife: "it's our four month anniversary today. we're going to celebrate at village inn."
husband: "we have a coupon."

"you know, boozer has a nice tatoo. i'm not sure what it is exactly, but it's a really nice design."

"if it's on water, it's legal."

"did you know your hair is extremely southern?"

"well, it's just that i'd be worried if someone said, "it smells like 'you' over here."

"i wouldn't mind having a swastica on the wall."

(i love it when people sing out loud thinking no one is around to hear them) "sweet caroline. bmmmphh bmmmph bmmmmph."

"are you allergic to coconut? because i already tried to kill someone today."

"do you think a deer could kill you?"

october is upon us. i have been waiting months for this. as soon as summer is over, i start prepping for one of my favorite holidays: halloween. some of my favorite memories as a child are dressing up in costumes and going trick or treating in my old neighborhood with my friends. i heard a ghastly rumor that some countries don't have halloween. shocking! no, i know it's just a crazy american holiday - i'm not ethnocentric. i just love it so much that i would like to buy the world a diet coke and sit them down to share all that is great about halloween. i don't know who came up with the american version of this un-holiday (apparently it was originally a druish holy day/ritual of sorts - much like tupac, those druids know how to party). even as an adult i love october/halloween because that means a few things - fall leaves, autumn harvest, loads of candy and the excuse to act like a kid again.

here is a list of all that is great about the month of october:

* halloween!!!!
* costume parties
* my mom's fall stew
* farmers markets with crisp apples from local orchards
* popcorn balls made with my sisters caramel corn recipe
* i just love the colors orange, brown, purple, green and black
* pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns
* corn mazes
* halloween peeps shaped like ghosts (mallow goodness)
* cupcakes that look like frankenstein
* tacky lawn decorations like tombstones, skeletons and ghosts
* getting to play dress up for a day
* cute little elementary school kids in their costume parades
* CANDY!
* target's halloween display
* jones soda limited edition flavors like candy corn and caramel apple
* those spooky sounds cd's that people play for trick or treaters
* people who dress up and pretend to be a stuffed person on the porch, then they chase screaming trick or treaters around the yard
*candy corn
* watching movies like lady in white, sleepy hollow, edward scissorhands, beetlejuice, watcher in the woods, private eye, young frankenstein, clue, lost boys and heathers.
* black and orange m&m's
* going to haunted houses with friends. the best ones are the haunted forest in american fork, frightmares at lagoon and the rocky point haunted house in slc.
* pumpkin bread
* halloween carnivals
* wearing a costume to work
* caramel apples
* shopping for costumes
* michael jackson's thriller
* halloween party treats and decorations
* fall leaves
* haunted hay rides
* bonfires
* oktoberfest - snowbird + bratwurst = awesome
